New Hair Cut & Todays Minimal Makeup

Why does a haircut have the power to make us feel brand new?

I was in desperate need of a haircut! I had extension put in in November so there has been no trims or highlights since then. When the extensions came out my hair was in great condition but it badly needed to be trimmed and shaped.

After a visit to lovely Mammy….

I had a few highlights and a semi of low-lights done.  I love low lights for richness and texture. I had an inch of two trimmed off the ends and had some layers added through the back and to frame my face.

Today was a minimal makeup sort of a day.

  • Revlon Colorstay in Natural Beige
  • Sonia Kashuk Hidden Agenda Concealer Palette
  • DH Brows – Taupe
  • Covergirl Lash Blast Mascara
  • Cargo Lip Gloss – peach
  • Too Faced Pink Leopard Bronzer
  • Make Up For Ever Aqua Kohl Liner
  • Benefit High Beam

A note on the extensions I removed – They were amazing. It was like having perfect hair every morning. The best things was having no glue. My hair is growing at about three times its usual growth rate so I found they grew out quicker. I would definitely get the again when my hair goes crappy after baba is born. I had them done at I couldn’t recommend them more!

I feel like a new woman!

New Hair Extensions – Without Glue! From Issonni…

I have some new hair!

You know me, hair extension addict. I swore I wouldn’t go semi-permanent again after my glue-ins but when I heard about the arrival of glue free Micro Interweave to Ireland I couldn’t resist. I had them applied at Issonni and I couldn’t be happier. Here is a video documenting my experience and a review. There’s also more info below.

Here is a little before and after shot (my hair appears to be a different colour in the second image – I blame the Christmas tree lights!)

My hair extensions were applied by hair extension expert Emilia Ogoo. Her studio is based Kimmage, Dublin. She also stocks her own brand of hair care products designed for natural hair extensions – the Moisturising Balm in particular is amazing. Emilia has been in the hair business for years. She offered me great advice and was a well of knowledge. I have heard so many hair extension horror stories, it’s definitely worth investing in someone with experience. I love my hair!

Here’s Emilia!

And her fabulous studio…

One month on… I still love my hair. It’s easy to manage and style. I don’t have to wash it as often because it’s not as thin. I was surprised at how easy it is to wash and dry the extensions. I have also has so many compliments. I don’t want to go back to my aul’ hair!

Little Haul – Hair Tools

I picked up a few hair related items this morning in Boots. I binned eight hair brushes yesterday. They were a disgrace –  the bristles barely brushed my hair. I don’t know what I was keeping them for!

I actually went into Boots to look for a Tangle Teezer and got a little distracted, as always. I bought two brushes and a hair wand…

I choose a mini Tangle Teezer, popped it into my basket and instead of heading for the till I decided to have a nosy at the other hair brush offerings. After much deliberation and testing I selected a Botanics Cushion Brush. According to the box it conditions hair and prevents breakage. I’m on board with that.

I had to pass through the electrical isle to get to the till. Low and behold I was drawn in my a new wand. New? Surely I need that. Probably not.

The wand in question is Babyliss Waving Wand. Now I have the conical wand, which I love, but the idea of having one designed for loose waves instead of curls drew me in.

It’s a weird shape, obviously to encourage waving rather than curling…

Dear Santa, I would like the same hair as the model on the Waving Wand box.I have been a very good girl this year (shopping aside).

Here’s a close look at the Botanic brush. I tried it this afternoon. So far, I like.

A note on the Tangle Teezer – don’t buy it in Boots! It costs €14.99, even for this mini version. I saw it this evening in my local chemist (McArdles) for €9.99 so shop around.

Here’s the scale of the mini version. I wanted one that I could throw in my handbag…

I look forward to recording a waving wand tutorial and review.

Review – New Volume Refresher Spray from John Frieda…

This week I have been road-testing the new Luxurious Volume Anytime Volume Refresher Spray by John Frieda.

The spray is designed to give you a freshly styled, full bodied bit of ‘oomph’. It does just that. When I first saw it I thought it would be the same as Batiste Dry Shampoo and although it does the same job there are a few differences. This products is primarily designed to refresh your style, increase volume and mop up oils. For me it adds textured volume without bulk. I love batiste in an emergency if I didn’t get to wash my hair and it needs one but it’s a little too drying to use as a styling product for me. The John Frieda spray also feels lighter than Batiste, less powdery. It’s easier to rub in to my roots. I find that when I use Batiste I have to spend ages rubbing it in to get rid of the white powder. It’s usually still visible, and I’m a blonde – must be harder for those of you with dark hair. That being said, it’s a blessing when you need your highlights done!

I quite like the scent, fresh and clean but what I  like most in the cold, clean feeling on my scalp after application. I also only had to use a very small amount to get the desired results. I have been using it to revive my hair on the day after I have washed it. If you have flat, limp hair like me it’s definitely worth a try.

The bottle is medium sized, small enough to fit in a larger handbag. Although a larger size would be great for my dresser and probably more economical for me since I fly through products like these.

Each bottle contains 125ml and costs £5.49. They’re sold in all the usual places – Boots, Superdrug, chemists, supermarkets…basically John Frieda products are widely available :)

Major holiday hair issues…

I’ll get straight to the point. My hair is a holy state.

I blame the humidity, the sea, the chlorine, the sun and the fact that I haven’t allowed my mam to trim my hair since it was last cut – an attempt to cling to every millimetre of hair. Whatever the reason, my gruaig has been so unruly that I have resorted to slinging it in a knot at the top of my head.

I know I shouldn’t complain.  This time last year I had about a third of the hair I have now. I should be thankful for my crazy mop of hair.

As far as packing went I decided to leave the usual mammoth size bag of hair products behind and be ‘sensible’- this is not a word one uses often in relation to Amy Dillon let me tell you. Anyway, I settled on a bottle of Redken shampoo and a mini pot of Wella hair mask. The Redken Colour Extend Sun is great. It contains a UV filter to protect your hair and your colour. It also smells yummy – the main attraction I must. The Wella Brilliance mask is great at home but not intense enough for the sun.

Problem one, where is the conditioner? Problem two, where is the humidity spray? Problem three, where is the sea salt spray for nights when I just can’t be bothered? Problem four, where is the heat protection spray to use with the crapest hair straighteners on the plane? On the shelf at home in the name of sensible that’s where!

I also brought one of those rubbish travel hair dryers that blow your hair in every direction except down. The Corioliss Pro straighteners was lobbed in my suitcase with the aim of using it to both straighten and create waves. It was a bit much to expect from it apparently, it just drags through my hair instead and leads to breakage.

I was on the hunt for a miracle.

I stumbled across a bottle of Palmolive hair conditioner and a small bottle of Frizz Ease yesterday. They seem to have tamed the beast for now. My hair isn’t exactly silky or anything but at least I doesn’t look insane.

Note to self – don’t be sensible next time you travel, be realistic. Oh, and buy a new hair straighteners for the love of god!

Current Hair Care Favourites

It’s no secret that I’m as fickle about hair care as I am about skin care. But I have found a little system that really works for me lately. It’s a little bit of a pick n’ mix brand wise.

Products that have made it into my favourites list

  • John Frieda Go Blonder
  • John Frieda Frizz Ease 3 Days Straight
  • Redken Clear Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner
  • Wella Brilliance Mask for Fine hair

I’m absolutely in love with Redken Clear Moisture. I have worked my way through all of their shampoos over the years and have finally found one that’s not too heavy for my fine hair. I love the fresh scent of the products too. My hair is like silk after using these but I still get to keep what little volume I have.

I picked Clear Moisture up from Hair Matters in Clontarf (they have a buy one shampoo get a conditioner free offer).

The Wella Brilliance mask is for fine hair too. I have never found a hair mask that’s light enough for my hair. It conditions the hair very well without leaving a residue or making hair greasy. Love.

Go Blonder – I recorded a video review on this one. It’s excellent for root blending. I’m going a little longer between highlights now.

3 Day Straight – Great stuff and easy to use. Spray it on and dry your hair. I get three days free from the dreaded ‘humidity hair’. Video review will be up on this one later this week.

Organic Irish Shampoo & Conditioner from Voya

Tis no secret that I’m a fan of Voya – it’s Irish, it’s organic, it’s made from hand harvested seaweed but most of all it’s just top notch. So I was excited to hear that they now have a shampoo and conditioner.

I have had a mare of a time finding a shampoo and conditioner that are organic and work well with my hair. I have had more success with conditioners but for some reason I have yet to find a decent shampoo.

I love the names of these products. The shampoo is called Silky by Nature and the condition is Forget Me Knot – I love it. The smell lovely – natural without a hint of essential oil.

I took a break from my usual hair care routine and decided to give them a bash last night. Today my hair is soft and manageable.

As I mentioned, the products are made from seaweed. One would expect that there is a tiny amount in each tube but it is in fact listed second in the ingredients after water. I’m impressed.

Some of you were asking me where you can buy Voya products. They’re available from the Voya website.

Have you tried any decent organic shampoo’s and conditioners?
