City Mono Eyeshadows from NYC Eyeshadows

It’s a scorcher of a day here in the Canaries. Too hot for lounging about getting over-heated so I decided to take myself to a local air conditioned cafe for a spot of blogging. There are a few products I want to talk about this week but the first lot that popped into my mind are the City Mono Eyeshadow from N.Y.C. – New York Color Cosmetics.

I have been trying out four shades over the past few weeks… Continue Reading

Mmmm! MaxFactor Goodies

Max Factor is a brand have dipped into on occasion but have limited experience with. I love their mascaras – 2000 Calorie was a favourite of mine for a long time. I also once had a brief fling with one of their foundations – I remember recording a foundation tutorial with it way back when.

I am happy to be able to explore the bounties of this brand a little more.

24 from False Lash Effect Mascara – This mascara has a built-in primer that wraps lashes. Max Factor is a sister company of the US brand Covergirl – hence the latters infamous Lashblast being the same as the formers False Lash Effect Mascara. I have always been a fan od Max Factors mascara and I’m sure this one will be no different!

I have two of Revlons Flipstick Colour Effects Lipsticks – Bloomy Pink and Salsa Red. They are lip duos. The colours can be worn alone, blended together or used on different parts of the lips – to highlight the plumpness for example. (€11.99) “An innovative double-ended lipstick you mix, match and personalise your own lip colour”.

I have never tried Max Factors nail polishes either so I shall have some fun swatching these.

Right, I’m off to start swatching and testing!

Thoughts on Max Factor??

Isa Dora Spring Make-up..

You have probably heard me yapping about my love for Isa Dora cosmetics when I was a teenager. Last year I made a Product Rave video about their blush (posted below). Well now they have a few products lined up for Spring and I have been dabbling. Oh how Amy likes to dabble.

The collection is called Pearls of Passion

Wonder Nail Polish (€7.95)

Eye Shadow Quartet ‘Rainbow Pearls’ €13.50

Glow Stick Blusher – Rose Petal (€15.50)

Twist-up Metallic Eye Pencil (€10.95)

This bracelet comes free with any 2 purchases…

Some swatches…

Here is my Porduct Rave video on the Glowstick – I also apply it on camera to show you what it looks like.

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_07KvQECUk

And a swatch on my arm for shade reference – one needs to be thorough :) …

My thoughts so far:

  • Love the nail polish. At first glance I thought it was just another lavender shade but when I saw the reflects I was thrilled. It looks absolutely beautiful on (I’ll swatch it later and post in the morning). If a garden fairy were to choose a nail polish this would be for her.
  • The bracelet is completely wearable. In fact, I have worn it twice this week. It’s good quality – not what you expect for a freebie.
  • The blush… well, the video speaks for itself. I also included it my Spring favourites video before I knew they were re-promoting it.
  • The eyeshadow palette isn’t like the ones I used to collect as a teen. This palette in particular is very shimmery. If you’re into shimmer than you might like. I would also recommend an eye base to avoid fallout. I like the goldy shade the most. I applied it over a paint-pot and it looks beautiful on blue eyes.

Isa Dora is available in pharmacies around Ireland. (My local Unicare stocks the full range).

Any thoughts on Isa Dora?

Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation – Good or Bad?

I’m still on my quest for the best drugstore foundation. I like Revlon Photoready and rely on Rimmel Lasting Finish on days where I need a little more coverage but I still want to explore. I picked up a bottle of Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation after my Lasting Finish ran out. It was on special for €6 in Boots – how could I resist!

I am always attracted to products that claim to brighten and provide a glow but products that actually achieve this are few and far between. I expected this to be like Rimmels previous anti-fatigue offering, their Recovery Foundation. Wrong in some ways but right in others – the grit in Recovery is not in Wake Me Up, thank heavens! The shimmery face however, is the same.

Here’s a photo of me wearing the foundation to give you an idea of how it looks on the skin.

I should point out that I had a hefty amount of Make Up For Ever Full Cover on my chin in this picture and a little Photoready concealer under my eyes.

So what do I think?

The good:

  • I like how it looks in normal lighting and on camera – natural and fresh. It creates a soft-focus affect.
  • It’s one of those Smear-it-on-n-run foundations. No need to worry about brushes and bases and over blending.
  • It’s cheap.
  • The shade suits the undertones in my skin – ie. this shade is not pinky
  • Coverage is on the medium side of light to medium. You will need concealer for posts and discolouration – but that’s not a foundations job anyway.

The bad:

  • There’s no glow for me, soft with a touch of dewy and sparkle. The sparkle level is a little more than Photoready and looks fairly obvious is harsh lighting and sunlight. (I was a bit paranoid wearing it to be honest – it could have looked fine but I didn’t want to look like a disco ball).
  • Staying power is a HUGE downer for my skin (normal to combination). I had no foundation left on my chin after 2 hours, well if you don’t count the bits clinging to the side of my spot! After a full day of wearing I had hardly any product left on my face, with the exception of slightly flaky areas, which looked worse.
  • The shade range doesn’t cater for fair skin. If you’re NW/NC20 or lighter you will probably have difficulty finding a shade that suits.

Would I recommend?

For my skin type, no. If you don’t want a shimmery face, no. But this could work really well on dry skin, or even normal. If you have no issues with shimmer it’s worth a look. If you look on MakeUpAlley, some people love this so it could be a skin type issue with me. Personally, I won’t be repurchasing, although I will use up the rest of the bottle – I’ll just wear it on dull days :)

As I mentioned, I bought it in Boots for €6 – it’s well worth a try for that price. You might love it. Then if it doesn’t suit your skin type there’s no need for boo hoo’s. It’s usually €10.95 I think, hardly going to break the bank but we’re all looking after out cents these days.

Have you tried this? What do you think?

What do you spend No7 vouchers on?

I’m always grateful when the sales assistant hands me a €7.50 off voucher at the till in Boots. However, the voucher is for No.7 products. I’m really not a fan (although their lipstick in Starshell is one of my favourites).

When I was in college I seemed to be in Boots a few times a week (god knows why) and one term I had an endless supply of No7 vouchers. I actually used to struggle to find products to buy. I hated the eyeshadows, eye liners, lipliners and glosses so  I often bought skincare items. A few years on and really nothing has changed. The same weak products in the range are still weak.

Anyway, I found myself with three vouchers this week and not a clue what to spend them on. As I mentioned, I’m not a fan of the brand in general. I find it very over-priced and many of the products remind me of their 17 range but with fancier packaging. I find the pigmentation of the eyeshadows and glosses disappointing and the formulations of the eye liners and brow pencils just don’t cut it for me.

That being said, I was determined to find a product to spend the voucher on :)

I swatched and tested a few bits n’ pieces and settled on two items…

No7 Quick Cover Concealer and No7 Nail Polish in Pink Grapefruit. (Reviews and swatches to follow)

I just couldn’t find anything to spend the third voucher on. I was tempted by an oil shower wash but left flustered. I would love to hear what you have picked up with your vouchers in the past or recently. Any recommendations?

NYX Lipstick Haulage

NYX Lipsticks. I only have Paris and Flower, both of which I love just as much as any of my MAC pinks. I wanted to try a few more. These lippies are all from BeautyFragrances.co.uk.

Swatches and reviews to follow, as always :) So far, I’m loving the three neutral shades. I’m still on the fence about the pinks but I will keep you updated.

Do you have any more NYX lipstick recommendations for me?
