Treatment Review | VIORA REACTION Skin Tightening, Cellulite & Stretcmarks

Over the past year or so I have been starting to think about anti-ageing products and treatments. I want to preserve what I have for as long as possible, don’t we all. I was invited to Renaissance Laser & Skin Clinic  to try their new Viora Reaction treatment.

How it works

Viora delivers radio frequency energy to the underlying layers of the skin. As we age collagen fibres weaken; everything from sun exposure to smoking and stress has a damaging affect. Viora stimulates the production of collage and elastin but protects the surface of the skin, this means to redness, rashes or peeling. Continue Reading

A Magic Treatment – Image 02 Lift (No downtime!)

skincare-6We have always been told to leave enough time between a facial and a special event so your skin looks it’s best. It has been my experience that the benefits of the facial have often worn off before the big day. I was excited when I heard about Image’s new treatment – the O2 Facial. You can have it the day before a big event or even on the morning of. I was intrigued. Continue Reading

11 inches down – Universal Contour Wrap

I got a pressie of a Universal Contour Body Wrap from my dearest. It couldn’t have come at a better time – I booked myself in for the treatment in my local beauty salon the day before I left for my holiday.

As I’m sure many of you know, the Universal Contour Wrap is designed to help you lose inches for up to one month. The reason I selected this treatment was because of all the water storage issues I had. It involved being wrapped in warm muddy bandages from neck to toe, donning a big body suit to help contain the water loss and sitting back in a comfy chair and watching a movie for an hour. I should point out that this is by no means a luxurious treatment. I did get to select a dvd (I opted for The Queen) while I waited for the mud to do it’s work.

Every inch of me was measured before the treatment started. It took about 15 minutes to apply the bandages and I requested extra focus on my hips and thighs. I then sat for an hour while it worked its magic. When my therapist returned the floor was flooded. The suit couldn’t contain the water.

I found a stock image for the wrap -there wasn’t a chance in hell that I was posting pictures of me wrapped in bandages.

I was then measured again and I was delighted to hear that I had lost 11 inches. Granted it’s just water, but hey, 11 inches is 11 inches. My abs looked defined and most of the water loss came from my tummy and hips with a little reduction in my upper arms (aka the bane of my life). I initially thought that I would have to shower off the remaining mud but the therapist rubbed it into my skin and asked me not to shower for a day or so to allow the mud to continue to work.

I paid €75 for my wrap but it was on special this month. I remember a few years ago this wrap cost in excess of €100. It’s well worth the doe but they recommend a course for the best results – a little outside my budget I’m afraid but the results from one treatment were great. My thighs and tummy looked much slimmer going on holiday. I had the treatment two weeks ago and the results have lasted.

My local beauty salon, Jule Beauty in Malahide, is the best I’ve been to. It feels more like a little spa rather than a beauty salon. They use Yon-Ka, Image and Dermalogica skin care – I’m a fan of all three. The staff are so professional and always make me feel at ease. When it comes to Birthdays and Christmas pressies I usually opt for a voucher. I mentioned before that I went for a pamper afternoon during the Winter. It involved hot chocolate and biscuits between sessions…heaven.

Have you ever had one?

The best anti-ageing treatment ever!

I have found the best anti-ageing treatment ever! Tall order, I know. I recently popped into Akina Beauty for an Image 4-Layer Facial.

I was greeted by the lovely Evelyn who took me through the treatment.  It consisted of mild acid peels (more information below) which are applied 4 times during the treatment. It promises to change the image of your skin in one treatment using Vitamin C, glycolic acid and gentle but highly active enzymes to speed up cellular turnover and brighten, tighten and lighten your skin.

This really isn’t like any usual facial. Evelyn wore gloves (to protect her hands from the acid) which initially reminded me of being at the dentist. I quickly learned that this treatment is about results so at that point I forgot about the gloves and looked forward to glowing skin.

At every stage of the treatment Evelyn made sure that I wasn’t feeling any discomfort. I felt nothing (classic beauty bloggers skin!). Although most people feel a mild tingling but nothing painful. I was assured that the results are worth any tingling sensations.

Despite the treatment being results orientated, the experience itself was relaxing. Upon leaving the salon I was given some maintenance advice. I was delighted to discover that Akina sell sample sizes of Image skin care products before committing to the full size products. The full size products range from €30 – €100, not too bad for such high standard products- not comparable to beauty ranges sold at beauty counters. I picked up the Ageless Max Cream and Total Resurfacing Mask, reviews to follow.

So, the results?

One word. Phenomenal. For the first day or two my skin looked nice and clear and felt softer but the real results were yet to be seen. My skin flaked a tiny amount for a few  days and by day 6 my skin felt and looked noticeably different. The scarring on my chin was reduced, the very fine lines at the sides of my eyes lessened, clarity was improved ten fold. The best way I can explain it is that my skin sat better on my bone structure. The best part was the amazing glow. 10 days on and my skin still looks great.

I have been quite regimented in my after-care, using spf and maintaining my skin with the Image Max Creme.

I will definitely be returning for another treatment. I may make it a seasonal thing. I’ve never had skin this good. Make-up sits so much better too, always a good thing. Well worth the €130!

WIN! 2 €100 Vouchers for Thérapie! Some Yummy Treatments

I’m popping into Thérapie next week to have an Eve Lom facial. I brought home a brochure from my skin consultation the other day and perused the other treatments. There are two more extreme treatments that really appeal to me. But first, the treatment I have booked.

After my consultation the beauty therapist recommended an Eve Lom Ultimate Cleanse. My pores are very clogged up at the moment, thanks to a deadly combination of hormones and Winter. The treatment is basicly designed to remove all the gross stuff from my face. Amen to that!  The therapist said it will also stimulates and regenerate my skin and put life back into my lacklustre complexion, once again – thank you Winter.  Apparently I will leave looking radiant and revitalised.  What really appealed to me about this one was that extractions are done in small sections after a warm mask. The mask is peeled back bit by bit and the extractions are done in that area while the skin is warm. I hear it’s less painful. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ll keep you updated on the results.

Here are the other treatments I was thinking about trying in the future…

Jet Peel (€120)

The jet peel is a natural treatment  which uses water and oxygen, both of which are necessary for cell growth and repair. It works on 5  different levels at once; it deep cleanses, exfoliates, hydrates, oxegenates and micro-circulates the treated area. It also improves skins texture, reduces wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation. Apparently the improvements are visible from one treatment but a course of five is recommended for maximum results.

The jet peel appeals to me because it’s also useful for acne and blackheads. It removes comedones without pain or discomfort. I hear it’s quite gentle and that your skin returns to it’s normal colour within 15 to 30 minutes.

If it’s good enough for Kim Kardashian it’s good enough for us! VelaShape contours, shapes and reduces cellulite. It uses an infra red device that shrinks the fat cells. This is followed by a suction device that rids the body of waste and excess fluid. The treatment manipulates collagen fibres and connective tissue and increases metabolism to the trated area through increaced blood circulation. I hear that Velashape is good for Post-Pregnancy Body Reshaping for those of you who are expecting. It’s safe and is FDA cleared. It was also voted No.1 Cellullite Precedure at the American Health and Beauty Awards in 2009. It’s only available in Ireland at Thérapie.

If you have tried any of these treatments let me know your thoughts. If I get around to giving them a whirl I will post details about the results.

PHYT’s Multi-Vita Facial – My Winter Skin Saviour

I had the most amazing facial last week. I have had a few facials lately as my skin has been in pretty bad shape. The best one I have had so far was a PHYT’s Multi-Vita Facial.

PHYT’s products are 100% organic and natural which is what initially appealed to me about this treatment. You know how I feel about skin products that are pumped full of chemicals, what a waste of money.

Get ready for some ‘oohing’ and ‘aah-ing’. As always, this review is based on my own experience and I am expressing my own views, I also have no affiliation with the brand or the salon (just to get that out of the way!).

When I arrived Virginie evaluated my skin and surprised me with the news that my skin was very dehydrated and fine. I thought I was doing my skin a favour by using anti-acne products. It turns out that I have been destroying my skin. I will now be moisturising like mad woman.

The facial itself was gentle and relaxing. The pore extractions were not tear inducing, I barely noticed it.  Virginie applied layer after layer of nourishing goodies (see below) which left my skin looking fresh and plump. There was a face and neck massage which is designed

The absolute best part was leaving the salon with calm skin –  with NO redness! This felt like some kind of miracle. Usually I look like I have done a round in a boxing ring when I leave a salon. My skin is prone to redness and is easily irritated so any extractions I have had before have left my face looking sore. Not this time. I left the salon without slipping to the bathroom to smear on some foundation and happily faced the world bare, my face that is.

My skin continued to improve all week. It felt comfortable, not tight. It also glowed – which made a change from my rather ashen appearance of late. Best of all, my breakouts cleared.  I also had quite a few compliments, always a good thing.

I also got quite a few tips from Virginie, who has amazing skin herself. Firstly I learned that a separate eye cream is not necessary if you are using organic products as there is no man-made particles that need to be absorbed. Conventional, non-organic skin creams often include artificial fragrances which make this unsuitable for use near the eye are. As a testament to how natural the products are, Virginie applied the face masks to my eyes too. There is nothing irritating or lab made involved, just goodness.

Secondly I learned that face scrubs can be too harsh on thin Celtic skins and that an organic face peel is a much better option. After it dries you gently flake it away. And lastly that hot water is not my friend – I use only luke warm water on my skin now. It causes far less irritation. I’m also quite shocked that I don’t have combination oily skin, apparently there wasn’t a trace of sebum in my skin. I need to treat my skin as dry and sensitive going forward – acne breakouts included.

I will definitely having another PHYT’s facial, it felt like Winter skin rescue. I’m looking forward to exploring the brand’s skin care products further.

There is more information below for anyone who is interested.

Have you heard of PHYT’s? Do you treat yourself to facials?

Here is some more information on the Multi-Vita facial

    • The Multi-Vita Facial is designed to brighten, tone and rejuvenate the skin giving instant and obvious results.  It benefits all skin types and ages, especially dry mature skin. It uses products which contain oils derived from wheat germ, yeast, sage and lemon & a high content of vitamins (A, B2, B5, C, A, E) all of which help to revitalise, lift and plump up the skin.

    • The facial takes one hour and 15 minutes to perform.

    • It costs €95 and is available from Virginie Claire Salon in Harold’s Cross and selected PHYT’S salons nationwide

The Multi-vita Facial : Step by step

    Step 1
The face and neck are cleansed with PHYT’S ‘Lait de Soins’ removing all traces of make-up and pollutants.  Eyes are cleansed with PHYT’S ‘Lotion Demaquilliant pour les Yeux’.

    Step 2
PHYT’S Tonique is then applied to remove residue cleanser and to help balance the skin’s pH.

    Step 3
The skin is exfoliated using PHYT’S Contact +.  This very gentle buffing cream can be used on even the most delicate of skins (including eyelids, neck and lips).  This exfoliation prepares the skin ensuring that it gets maximum benefit from the serums and mask treatment which will follow.

    Step 4
PHYT’S ‘Prelude 108 Serum’ is applied to the face and neck.  This lifts the skin, plumping up fine lines and boosting circulation. This serum contains cinnamon, 21 amino acid and silicone.

    Step 5
Pressure is then applied with single fingers) to key pressure points on the face and neck.  This helps improve blood circulation and relaxation.

    Step 6
PHYT’S Serum Multi-Vita is then applied to the skin.  Enriched with Céveble and vitamins A, B and E, zinc, yeast, lemon oil it brightens the complexion and smoothes the skin.  (Céveble is a PHYTS patented vegetally derived active element which is scientifically proven to firm the skin cells.)

    Step 7
PHYT’S Serum Anti-Rides is then applied.  This nourishes the skin and helps lymph drainage.  Massaged into the skin it helps plump up the skin.  (Key ingredients are Rosemary, Thyme, Cypress & Virgin oils, wheat germ, hazelnut and palm oil.)

    Step 8
Masque Multi-Vita is then applied.  This helps seal in and re-enforce the benefits of the serums.

    Step 9
Sérum Multi-Vita is again applied to further boost firmness and radiance.

    Step 10
An appropriate moisturiser is applied to complete the facial. Creme Ylang in my case.

Musings about Hair Removal – What do you think?

I find hair removal such a chore these days. I’m a bit of an obsessive hair remover and I used to enjoy the process but lately I dread it. With this in mind I though I would have a little rant about hair removal options and get your opinion.

Bear in mind that this is just my experience with hair removal methods. I’m no expert and like everyone else have learned though trial and error… a lot of error!

I can’t stand the long, hairy wait before a waxing. This is enough to put me off! The first time I had my legs waxed in a salon the beautician left bruises, not good. Needless to say I switched to another salon and had no such problems. It’s expensive if you rely on a salons services.

As far as waxing at home goes, I tried it once and it ended in tears. I applied a wax strip  under my arm and then couldn’t get the right angle to rip it off. There was also no one else at home. I ended up peeling it back little by little. The result? Patches of smooth skin mixed with patches of tissue trauma… there was blood! Yes, I’m an idiot.

    Home Laser Hair Reduction Systems

I have heard a few YouTube beauty guru’s and bloggers talking about the Boots Smooth Skin Intense Pulsed Light Hair Reduction System. It costs a bomb –  £325! (couldn’t find euro price). Apparently it reduces hair growth after a course of treatments. Boots say that it may not work on blonde hair so this would mean that my legs are out of the question but perhaps I could use it elsewhere. £325 is a bit of a risk though! Have you tried it or heard anything about it?

I found a little google image..

    Laser Hair Removal

The idea of being hair free permanently is what attracts me to laser hair removal. I know for many, it’s more a hair reduction than a removal but I would settle for that. It’s obviously an expensive option (although I’m seeing ads everywhere for clinics offering 80% reduced price). It also requires repeat visits but then again, any form of hair removal requires maintenance.

The cost is what has put me off laser hair removal in the past. I also have blonde hair  on my legs and I was told a few years ago that laser would not work on me. I did consider under arm and bikini though. As far as I know there is more advanced technology now.

Bottom line – I’m seriously considering it.

I just hate shaving. My skin is sensitive, dry and prone to ingrown hairs so I have to exfoliate  like a crazy woman. Despite a decade plus experience with shaving I still manage to cut myself every time! I don’t mind using a razor for touch ups in the Summer – if I have waxed or epilated and have a few sneaky little guys growing back but I don’t like relying on them. I also hate ladies razors, they never work as well as mens. Mach 3 all the way :)

    Hair Removing Mitts:

Yeah right! I bought some of these last year – they did a great job of exfoliating but did very little in the way of hair removing, for me anyway. I’d be interested to hear if these worked for anyone else.

Any of you that read my blog regularly will have heard me rave about the Braun Silk Epil. Don’t get me wrong, it hurts like a mother but the results are fantastic. People told me it would become less painful –  so I waited, and waited, then waited some more. No such luck for me! It’s still torture.

I would imagine that the experience is quite an individual thing – some people think it barely pinches, others run out of the bathroom crying. I’m the latter.  I just can’t bear it at the moment. At least in the Summer you have a goal in mind, right now I just couldn’t put myself through the pain!

    Depilatory Creams:

How many of us spend a fortune on Veet and Nair?! I use it on my brows and in summer on the white fluff on my arms (hope no men ever read this post haha). This is my favourite for instant results – smooth, easy, no pain. It has a major downside for me! It only lasts 24 hours before I can feel regrowth. Ok so it might be days before I actually see anything but I hate the feel!

It’s quite an expensive method of hair removal when you consider how much of it you use in one application. I have tried some cheaper brands and haven’t found them as good. If you have come across anything let me know.

    I’m a lost cause!

What is your favourite method of hair removal?

Beauty Salon treatments – Your thoughts?

I am up bright and early with a spring in my step this Saturday morning. Why am I a crazy woman up at 7am on the weekend?

I’m off for some much needed beautifying this morning. It was booked as a surprise present for me. I am heading off for a massage, facial and manicure. It may surprise you that I’m not a salon regular. I had more facials as a teen than in my adult life – When I was 14 when my mother freaked out about the emergence of  visible pores on my nose. She sent me in to Sherry in the Shelbourne Hotel for some emergency blackhead removal – they were just pores Mam, calm down :)

I’m a fan of home beautifying. I enjoy the buffing, scrubbing and filing. I happily apply my own false tan, whip up some body mask from ingredients in my fridge and smear on homemade goodies as part of a DIY facial. I also occasionally use shop bought products but my point is that it’s always done at home.

But for today I am happy to put my beautifying into the hands of some professionals.

This lead me to wonder about the rest of you. I would be really interested to know what your thoughts on salon /spa treatments are – do you frequent the salon? If so, what for? What am I missing out on?
