Make-up Artist Series – Special Effects: Make your own blood

4

When working as a make-up artist there may be a time you that you require some fake blood. You can of course buy it but you can also make your own very easily.

Once you have the ingredients in your cupboard you can whip up a batch on demand.

  • Red food dye
  • 62g gelatine
  • 57ml water
  • 62g glycerine

Mix the ingredients in the saucepan and gently heat until the ingredients have dissolved. Then add some red food dye. You can add some black food dye to make a the blood darker. You can also experiment with other dyes like brown.

Store it in a flask or an air tight container and pop it in the microwave to soften it up, just be careful it doesn’t get too hot.

It’s good to have breadcrumbs, rice crispies and cornflakes in your cupboard for adding to blood to create injuries.

I’ve made fake blood in the past. I used golden syrup with a smidge of water, mixing in red, blue and yellow food colouring to get the right colour and then a touch of cornflour. Tastes good ;)
