I have made no secret of the fact that I love Xen-Tan. Their spray tan is the best I have tried and the lotion provides and amazing just-spent-a-week-at-the-beach-look, with zero tango-ness. They have recently launched a Luminous Gold Gel and Moroccan Tan which I was only too delighted to road test.
Luminous Gold Gel
This is a silky, iridescent tanning product. It’s a clear gel but it leaves an instant golden sheen on the skin -perfect for the beach. Three hours later it develops into a rich golden tan. It does have a sparkling finish which won’t be everyones cup of tea – see the Moroccan Tan if you pass on shimmer. Personally I like a little iridescence on my limbs in the Summer, it can be quite flattery once its subtle and doesn’t look glittery. I tend to use matte products on my face and torso though.
The fact that this tan is a clear gel is a bonus but it’s a double edged sword. Clear gel means no colour guide. This doesn’t bother me in the slightest since I have been fake tanning for over a decade but this might be an issue for beginners. It’s their fastest drying formula so far, which is an important factor for me at the moment – no need to run up and down the landing to air-dry :) You also don’t have to worry about staining.
The tan has a light tropical scent but since it has such high levels of dha (the stuff that makes the ta develop) it does smell like fake tan while its developing. This doesn’t bother me since I can wash it off the following morning and not have to think about it for a week.
If you like a deep, dark tan than this one is for you. It is deemed the ultimate product for a truly beautiful dark, dark tan. Xen-Tan have included Argan Oil in this formulation. It’s a concentrated liquid-lotion and is easier to apply than their first lotion. It feels quite moisturising too.
What I like about these tans is that they are use weekly products. I know everyone is still hung up on gradual tans but I really can’t be bothered. I’m not into daily tanning – as I said before, why smell like fake tan every night when you can just smell of it once a week?! Tan smell bothers me as you can see :)

In my experience all Xen-Tan products fade evenly without going blotchy – assuming you have prepped your skin properly first. When I tan I tend to use natural nourishing artisan soaps on my skin when I shower and moisturise with an oil free lotion every day. Because Moroccan Tan is moisturising I find it lasts longer anyway. It also contains an ingredient called Lexorez which helps the tan time-release, extending the life of your tan and helps prevent it from gathering at ankles and knees.
I use the Xen-Tan Tanning Mitt. (€5/£3.99) I would never apply tan without a mitt again. Some of the cheapy mitts on the market cause chaffing – one from my local pharmacy is actually abrasive, scrubbing off the tan as I apply it. I prefer to buy them from fake tan brands. It’s worth spending an extra €2.
Xen-Tan tanning expert Natalie Roche recommends applying the tan twice a week. If you like an intense tan this would be perfect but since it fades evenly once skin is exfoliated prior to use I’m happy with once a week.
A note on skincare
As with all tans if your skin isn’t prepped and primed you won’t get the best results. I’ve read reviews slating good tans due to clinging to dry skin etc Personally I think it’s my responsibility to prepare my skin for tanning. Admittedly some tans make this easier than others. If you have dry flaking skin somewhere tan will undoubtedly stick to it. My advice is to exfoliate regularly with something extra-scrubby (very technical lingo), moisturise every day and apply oil-free moisturiser to the dry bits directly before tanning. I also use vaseline in my brows and cuticles to stop tan gathering. I also avoid oils between tanning to encourage even fading.
They cost €30 each which is a hell of a lot cheaper than my St Tropez Mousse addiction!
So in conclusion, I heart Xen-Tan :)
