We all love cheap and cheerful now and again. Essence and Catrice are two brands I reach for when I fancy a pharmacy/drugstore spree. I have a few items to show you from Essence’s Vintage District collection.
I heard that Essence had launched a few new nail polishes so of course I had to pay my local pharmacy a visit and have a lil’ look.
I only picked up two from the new range and the others I just couldn’t resist. I know you understand, I’m amongst friends :)
The larger bottles are €1.99 and the smaller ones are €1.29. How can you go wrong?
So far I have only tried Midnight Rocker. I’m in love! I will post swatches and a review over the next few days.
I love Essence nail polishes. They are cheap, fashionable and good quality for the most part.
Must. Control. Oneself!
What do you think of Essence polishes? Do you have a favourite?
I picked up a couple of Essence lipsticks in the cosmetic isle of my local supermarket the other day. I chose the lightest pink called Frost and a medium pink called Kiss You. They cheap and cheerful but are they even worth €2? Here are some pictures…
L to R: No.01 Frosted and No.43 Kiss You
Ok so the packaging is pretty tacky but to be honest that doesn’t really bother me. Anyway I suspect that this brand are not trying to appeal to the twenty something lady but rather young teens. Oddly enough, this does’t put me off – maybe I’m a fourteen year old at heart!
And some swatches….
The pros? Definitely the scent – they smell like bubblegum. They’re also quite glossy. The consistency is very sheer but smooth despite the shimmer. They also feel quite moisturising but I suspect that this is thanks to the glossy nature of the lipstick rather than added moisturisers.
Frosted in more shimmer than pigment but then again I think that’s the point. The Kiss You is more pigmented but it only adds a sheer coating of colour to the lips. That being said this shade is very similar to my natural lip colour. I must try it over concealed lips.
Unfortunately neither lipstick lasted long, not really a shocker though. They have the staying power of the Claires Accessories lip gloss which I really like so clearly longevity doesn’t put me off, I’m all about the pretty.
All in all a fun, cheap purchase but not something that will make it into my make-up bag permanently. I will play around with the medium pink a little more in the future though.
If Essence had been on sale when I was fourteen and I saw these two lipsticks I would be one happy girl! Unfortunately I’m getting on in age and so is my taste…sometimes :)
Today’s nails a bit of a failure to be honest. The skin-tone on my hands has lightened considerably over the past few weeks rendering my favourite Summer polishes useless. I now have to dig through my mound of nail polishes to find some that will look look on my fairer skin.
Today I hadn’t the time of the inclination to undertake such a dig. I settled for a shade that has been in my collection for at least a year and that I have yet to wear – Very Berry by Essence.
Essence 03 Very Berry
Every time I glance at my hands I sigh, I actually hate this colour on me! In the bottle it looks like a berry shade but on my nails it looks cerise! As much as I hate pearly pink shades I hate cerise more. I have nothing against those colours, they just do nothing for me.
It cost about €2.50 so it’s no big deal but I really hate when I polish is an entirely different colour to what I expect from the bottle. I applied two coats over a base shade, with no top coat so I don’t expect it to last. That’s not such a bad thing today!
What nail polish are you wearing today?
I love love love Essence Nail Polish. The cost between €2 and €3 and are great quality. They are so cheap that I want them all! At the moment I have 8 in my collection. I bought them in my local chemist. They are also also sold in Dunnes. Three of which I have not included as they are French Polishes. Here are the colours and swatches:
After 2 coats here’s how they look on the nail:
I think it’s time to pick up a few more!
What is your favourite Essence Polish?
I am often asked about what make-up to buy if you’re on a tight budget. I get asked this question so often from Irish ladies that I decided to dedicate a blog post to it.
Let me start by saying that I don’t think there is any one great drugstore brand. I tend to pick and choose from each brand. After much testing (haha) I have decided that each brand has their strengths and weaknesses; for example Natural Collection make great lipsticks but poor eye-shadows. Revlon is my overall favourite drugstore/pharmacy make-up brand. However, it is more expensive in Ireland (colourstay costs €17! Add a few euro to that and you could buy yourself a high end foundation)
What are your favourite drugstore items?
