The Natural Box – Glossy Box

Everyone and their mother has blogged about Glossy Box’s Natural Box offering. Unfortunately mine arrived only yesterday but her are my thoughts none the less. (You can back order boxes from Glossy Box).

I really like the box itself. It’s 100% biodegradable but mine won’t end up in the recycling bin anyway. I use my boxes to store make-up, products, as drawer organisers… you get the idea.

Needless to say, all of the products are natural and ethically sourced in this box.

Figs & Rouge Lip Balm: I love this already. My sister once brought me back a lip balm from a market in Greece and I used it everyday until I hit metal. This reminds me of it. It’s 100% organic and it’s also multifunctional; lips, cuticles, heel rubbing, dry skin patches… all the usuals.

Inika Cosmetics Certified Organic Eyeliner: I love eyeliners and always have a few on the go at the same time. I haven’t had a very good experience with organic eyeliners so far so I was surprised to like this one. I was also delighted that I received a sapphire shade rather than plain old black.

Philip B Drop Dead Straightening Balm: Silicone-free and non greasy. This tube is a good size considering how little of it you will use. It’s designed for use on wavy or curly hair to make it straight and de-tangle. I have straight hair but I still tried it to take out tangles. My hair was smooth and sleek.

Caudalie Vinosource SOS Thirst-Quenching Serum: This is my first experience with Caudalie. I spend quite a bit of money on natural face products so I was excited to see this. I wish the sample was a little bigger though, it would give more of an opportunity to really try out the product before I would purchase the full size.

Monu Professional Enriched Body Cream: I like the Monu products I have tried so far – all of them have been from Glossy Box! This smells like every other natural body cream so I wouldn’t get too excited. It will come in handy for traveling but my pregnant nose is finding essential oils a bit much these days. My skin is dry so I would expect to get only two full body applications with this size (hotel cosmetics size).

I’m really looking forward to Glossy Box’s May edition as it’s their first birthday this month!

Mmm….Neom Sensuous Body Wash & Lotion

I have been dabbling in Neom products lately. I recently reviewed their candles and bath oil set (Link). I was excited about trying their body range. I prefer to stick to organic bath products whilst pregnant but strong scents make me feel queezy. Another reason the body range in great!

Sensuous Organic Body Lotion

  • Ylang Ylang, Frankincense & Patchouli
  • Leaves my skin soft and smooth.
  • It’s infused with essential oils. The scent is lovely and it’s not overpowering. It also doesn’t smell like most other organic body lotions made with essential oils.
  • It’s also gorgeous when used after the body wash. Sort of like scent layering.
  • Winner of the Bazaar Hot 100 Beauty Awards
  • 95% certified organic ingredients; 5% natural ingredients
  • Size: 240m

Sensuous Organic Body Wash

  • This is a lovely body cleanser, gentle and non-irritating
  • Like the body lotion the scent is subtle and not over-powering
  • Contains soothing Aloe Leaf, Chamomile flower & Apricot Fruit Extract
  • 74% certified organic ingredients; 26% natural ingredients
  • Size: 240m

These are both lovely. They feel like a treat. The only thing I felt let them down a bit is the packaging. The box is beautiful and high quality but the bottles are plastic. Having tried the bath oil that comes in a gorgeous bottle I expected something similar for these product.

Both are available from Neom’s website where can collect Neom points, which can be redeemed against future purchases. I’ve also seen them on LookFantastic.com (with free international delivery). The wash retails at €20.49 / £18, whilst the lotion retails at €30.09 / £25.

Do you splash out on bath and body products or are you a drugstore fan? I’m a bit of both.

VOYA Cast Away Anti-Aging Facial Wash

I have been experimenting with a few different cleanser over the past few weeks. One I particularly liked is VOYA Cast Away Anti-Aging Facial Wash.

Before I get started I should point out that I’m a fan of wash-off cleansers. They fit in with my lifestyle. The fact that I’m usually falling into bed exhausted these days means I need a make-up remover that takes 20 seconds max. Cleansing isn’t something I luxuriate over any more. That being said I do like a bit of luxury, especially since I’m short on time. Some people loathe wash-off products. I think this is often down to skin type – these types of products are often drying. Not this one.

It’s lovely to find a wash-off product that offers anti-aging properties too. This bad boy is made from natural cleansing ingedients and VOYA’s hand harvested algae. It removes make-up, grease and apparently pollutants – although I can’t testify to that one. It washes everything off quickly and left my skin feeling soft, without a hint of dryness. For extra exfoliation I use a muslin cloth to remove the wash.

Skin sensitivity has been an issue for me lately and I often find myself reaching for the same gentle products – namely from Origins or VOYA. More on Origins tomorrow.

Cast Away costs €26 for 125ml from voya.ie or Avoca. Their products are also on sale around Ireland – you can check their website for a full stocklist.

What are your thoughts on wash-off cleansers?

Phyt’s Rituals Set – An Organic Mammy’s Day Pressie? (& Review)

I am a huge fan of Phyt’s skincare. It’s natural but has potent ingredients that work on my skin without causing any irritation. I was pretty excited to see their Rituals Set as I had yet to try their body care products.

The set contains:

1. Hand Cream (40ml). 3 in 1 hand treatment, with lemon as an anti-pigmentation component for the skin, natural vitamin E for strengthening the nails and hazelnut oil, patchouli & rosemary to nourish and protect the hands against aggressions due to climate, cleaning products etc

2. A travel Relaxing Body Oil for nourishing the skin. Can be used with pregnancy. Contains: wheatgerm oil to nourish and keep the elasticity of the skin, lavender, tarragon and natural vit E.

3. A travel Body Gommage scrub shower gel with apricot seed powder for the exfoliation, orange & palmarosa for relaxing scents & skin soothing properties.

The set costs €35 which is pretty good for products that are 100% natural. It would also make a lovely Mother’s Day pressie although I tend to buy sets like this for myself too – it’s a good way to try a variety of products without shelling out for the full size.

What did I think?

The oils is my favourite product in the set. Although it’s travel size it will last a decent amount of time as a little goes a long way. It smells fresh and natural and left my skin soft. Best of all I didn’t end up with those blasted bumps at the backs of my arms. The hand cream is lovely too. Again, a little goes a long way and smells lovely. The shower gel with exfoliating particles is gentle and refreshing. More for regular use rather than the monthly skin sloughing event. I would re-purchase all of these products.

Phyt’s products are sold in salons all around Ireland – stockist here link!

Any more ideas for Mother’s Day? Some Mammy’s are harder to buy for – mine is definitely in this category!

Luxury Heaven – Neom Restore Luxe Bath Essentials

I’m mad about candles. An evening isn’t an evening without one. Occasionally I light one to help me work and I always light one in the bath. They make me feel serene. I’m also a huge fan of organic bath products so I was delighted to try some Neom products. Neom is a luxury organic brand. I hadn’t heard of them until recently – I have really been missing out.

I have been testing the Restore Bath Essentials which comes with a 100ml bath oil and a candle…

Restore is a blend of Jasmine, Ginger & Sandalwood.  It’s pretty and fresh but also has depth from the sandalwood. The bath oil is a huge 100ml. It’s so potent that a few tiny drops makes your bath smell and feel like heaven.  I have one bath a week and shower the rest of the time. With few drops once a week I should have this bottle for ages.

The candle is 75g and is made from vegetable wax with pure essential oils. There are no synthetic fragrances and there is 20 hours of burn time. I tend to light mine for an hour or two at a time. They also sell large candles with 3 wicks which burn for 55 hours. I would love to try one of these with a different fragrance.

The combination of the candle and the oil provide a truly holistic experience. I feel completely rejuvenated after the bath.  I also find it great for nausea (more on this at a later date).

This set is £39 reduced from £45 Link. It is expensive but believe me, for a treat it is worth every penny. I can’t wait to try more!

Are you a candle fan? Any recommendations?

Magic Mask for Dry Skin

I’m trying out another Voya product this week. This time it’s a mask called Maskerade. This one is geared at dry,  dehydrated skin. Perfect for Winter.

Like all Voya products, Maskerade is made from hand harvested seaweed. It’s also organic. Yay.

I have used it roughly five times and so far I like it. It feels like a little moisture injection. The mask still manages to draw out impurities so like all face masks it’s probably best not to use it right before a big event. I would use it a week before any event to be on the safe side. After use my skin was soft and luminous. My forehead also felt less tight.

It’s also very easy to apply – I apply it with my fingers to clean skin in an upward motion. Leave it on for 10 minutes  and then wash off with a muslin cloth (is there any mask or cleanser that doesn’t work better when used in conjunction with a muslin cloth!)

Like most Voya products, this one is expensive at €35. Well I suppose it is a luxury brand. It’s also organic and uses hand harvested seaweed. The bottle is also large so I’ll get plenty of applications out of it. It would actually make a nice present. I noticed on their website that Voya won Best Natural/Organic Spa Product Range in the The Crystal Awards. Easy to see why.

For those who might be interested, Voya products are sold from their website and through spas and salons around Ireland.

Need it: PHYT’s Travel Collection

I love and adore PHYT’s products. No gunk (code: harsh chemicals), they smell natural, they’re gentle on sensitive skin and they actually work. What more could I want eh? I know, a travel collection!!

I’m a sucker for a travel kit.

Enter the Bionatural Cocoon Travel Collections…

Each Travel Collection contains a 50ml Body Butter + 40ml Shower Gel and retails at €33.  (This reduces to €25 for the week of October 24-29)

The ‘Relaxing’ Collection soothes and relaxes using restorative oils (Lavender, Rose-Geranium and Jojoba).  These gently nourish and relax. The ‘Energising’ Collection uses refreshing oils (Peppermint, Lemongrass and Mandarin Orange) to stimulate and invigorate the senses

The Body Butter melts into the skin giving it long lasting & effective nourishment, whilst the Foaming Shower Gel gently cleanses and soothes the skin.

PHYT’s also have a new Cocoon Escape Body Treatment (which I will review shortly) which costs just €30 for the launch month of October (normal RRP €45).  During this forty minute treatment, you will receive a full body exfoliation (using Apricot Seed Powder) and a body massage with Body Butter. I always have my PHYT’s treatments at Virginie Claire  Salon in Harold’s Cross but they are stocked in many salons and spa’s around Ireland. Click here for more info.

‘Nuff said, I’m in.

Saoirse Ronan’s Fav Moisturiser – had to try it!

My moisturiser of choice lately is Geranium & Thistle Skin Cream from Pai. Apparently it’s Saoirse Ronan’s moisturiser of choice and Natalie Portman loves the ranges. I had to try it.

For those of you who haven’t heard of Pai, it’s a premium organic skincare range which was launched in 2007. It’s also certified by the Soil Association.Their products are high performing and made from pure plant extracts. They are completely paraben and chemical free so are ideal for sensitive and allergy prone skin.

I really like the Geranium & Thistle cream.  It’s designed to clear and re-balance congested combination skin, that’s me unfortunately.

It’s absorbed by the skin quite quickly. It’s not sticky or oily and left my skin matte. It also works well as a base for make-up on combination skin.

I love the packaging and the branding. It’s a little different to the run of the mill organic ranges out there. The pump on top of the glass bottle is great. I’m not a fan of sticking my hands into pots of cream – I hate that it gets behind my nails. One pump is enough for one application so a little goes a long way.

Pai products are sold direct from their website. They also list all of their ingredients in plain English so you know what’s in the bottle wihtout needing a degree in chemistry. They also sell little sample pots so you can try before you commit to the larger bottles.

I think I’ll be giving the Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil a try next. The Geranium & Thistle Skin Cream costs €29.95 /£24.

Organic Irish Shampoo & Conditioner from Voya

Tis no secret that I’m a fan of Voya – it’s Irish, it’s organic, it’s made from hand harvested seaweed but most of all it’s just top notch. So I was excited to hear that they now have a shampoo and conditioner.

I have had a mare of a time finding a shampoo and conditioner that are organic and work well with my hair. I have had more success with conditioners but for some reason I have yet to find a decent shampoo.

I love the names of these products. The shampoo is called Silky by Nature and the condition is Forget Me Knot – I love it. The smell lovely – natural without a hint of essential oil.

I took a break from my usual hair care routine and decided to give them a bash last night. Today my hair is soft and manageable.

As I mentioned, the products are made from seaweed. One would expect that there is a tiny amount in each tube but it is in fact listed second in the ingredients after water. I’m impressed.

Some of you were asking me where you can buy Voya products. They’re available from the Voya website.

Have you tried any decent organic shampoo’s and conditioners?

Natural Deodorants – What I’ve Tried

Although I’m an advocate of green skin care, I tend not to go for the green option when it comes to deodorant. I have tried quite a few natural and organic products so I thought it might be a good idea to share my experiences with you.

Most of us have heard about the dangers associated with ingredients in our favourite deodorants which contain aluminium and parabens. The skin is an organ so anything you apply to it will be absorbed by the body. Add an aerosol antiperspirant into the equation and you are also inhaling those ingredients into your lungs. This might not bother most people but I think I’m among a growing number of people who are starting to consider what we’re pumping into our bloodstreams.

Natural deodorants don’t stop you sweating but they are designed to prevent odour.

Here are some natural deodorants I have tried:

Déophyt’s – this one is an organic deodorant spray. It smells like essential oils. PHYT’s products are sold in salons around Ireland (and all around the world I think) – check stocklists. I had no redness, irritation or odour. It’s not designed to stop perspiration, just to prevent odour.

Dr Hauschka Deodorant Fresh – This actually works,  I liked it a lot. I came across it on Makeupalley (64% of users said that they would repurchase).

I bought mine from my local health shop in a set. I had no odour issues and even wore it for walking and the gym. The scent is very light, powdery and herbal. The downside is that it is very expensive (about €14), too expensive for me to rely on unfortunately.

Crystal Body Deodorant – Odour wise, this worked for me quite well on a day to day basis where no cardio was involved.

But I found it rough on my underarms, my skin is so sensitive there. If you’ve never tried the crystal deodorant it works by wetting the stone before each use and then roll it under your arms. I found  it a little messy and as it dissolved quite unevenly, jagged edges formed on the surface. Not for me.

Green People Aloe Vera Roll on Deodorant – This is an award winning product which is why I decided to buy it. It’s also highly rated in The Green Beauty Bible.

I liked this one but I found myself checking my clothes for perspiration marks on busy days. It was great for chill out days, not for days where you’re running around like a mad woman. No odour to speak of though. It was also very gentle. As far as I remember it’s suitable for eczema and psoriasis sufferers. (£7.95 for 75ml)

I hear good things about Uterkram Liquid Deo Crystal so I may try this one next.

Bare in mind that just because a product says ‘Natural’ on the packaging does not mean it  uses natural ingredients. Usually it’s the same host of lab made ingredients – ‘Natural’ is just the sales angle. Look for products that are certified organic or at state that they are aluminium and paraben free.

What I use now

The bottom line for me is that I have yet to find an amazing deodorant that doesn’t contain potentially harmful ingredients. I tend to use a natural one, at the moment it’s PHYT’s, on the days where I have no physical activity planned. If I plan to be out all day, at the gym etc I always use my trusty Mitchum stick.

This is hands down the best deodorant I have ever used. It might not be natural but I could be spraying aerosol antiperspirant and inhaling a boat load of it into my lungs.

Have you tried any natural deodorants?
