AHA is a term we beauty junkies hear thrown around regularly. Since I have now become more concerned with looking after my skin I though a little further investigation was in order. I wondered whether there are enough benefits to AHA’s in skincare to warrant buying such a product.
What is AHA?
AHA’s, Alpha-hydroxy-acids, are fruit acids and come in a variety of forms including lactic acid and glycolic acid. They work by chemically exfoliating the skin. Many a dermatologist recommend AHA products in place of a good old facial scrub.
Research shows that AHA’s…
- help cell turnover
- Increase collegen in the skin
- Clears pores
- Reduce skin discolouration
- Break down the protein that binds dead skin cells together leaving plumper skin
What skin type benefits from AHA’s?
Products that contain between 5% and 10% AHA are recommended to see a difference.They are also best for those with normal or normal to dry skin as they AHA’s have difficulty getting through oil. If you have very sensitive skin you may want to pass on AHA’s.
My experience with AHA’s:
As mentioned in a previous post I love The Doctors Collection glcolic cleanser. I use it for 3 weeks in a row every 6 months. It contains 10% glycolic acid. I never experienced any irritation although I wouldn’t use a product like this all of the time. I picked this up at my local beauty salon last year. I’m sad to report that they don’t sell it anymore but there are hundreds of similar products on the market. I noticed a huge improvement:

AHA’s have been used for aging skin for centuries. They can be found in moisturisers, sun creams, cleansers, foundations, the list goes on.

I love AHA’s! I started using Neostrata Foaming Glycolic Wash about a month and a half ago ( in conjuntion with Trilogy Rosehip oil) and my skin is the best it’s been in years.
Initially the persistent breakouts on my chin seemed to get worse but then after a couple of weeks my skin became so smooth and no more spots. It’s also cleared up any dry, flaky areas too and seems way more effective than any exfoliator I’ve ever tried ( and I’ve tried a lot!) I’m just a bit worried as my bottle is going to run out soon and they haven’t got any more in the chemist where I bought it and I haven’t seen it anywhere else. The hunt is on!
Hi Amy, have used profound before. It’s fabulous. Had a treatment of six of these facials before my wedding. My skin was amazing after. Have one every six months now and still use the cleanser a week every two months. Hope your chin clears up soon. You can order the producats online from Ann McDevitt. Know it’s expensive but cleanser lasts for ages as you only need a tiny amount.

A few months ago I started using an Australian one called Alpha-H Liquid Gold – I bought it on a whim from the shopping channel when they were having a 2-for-1 sale before Christmas. For the first couple of months I thought it was doing nothing and I’d just bought an expensive toner, but almost overnight I noticed a sudden difference in the clearness of my skin. The red in my cheeks had reduced considerably and my skin just looked much more smooth and clear. It hasn’t done much for the sun spots on my giant forehead though. Oh well, you can’t have everything!
